        Hard Times at Hartsel, Colorado
For the last several years, the little town of Hartsel, Colorado a little Southeast of Fairplay in Park County has been where 'Skinners & Rendezvous'ers who attend Rondys held on the nearby Buffalo Springs Ranch go to get their ice, gas, snacks & what-have-you.  ( Picture above at right:  CBS4's Suzanne McCarroll talks to local shopkeeper about hard times in Hartsel. (Photo from KCNC-TV 4 Denver Web Site  www.cbs4denver.comHartsel has been good to 'Skinners & Flatlanders alike.  But the people of Hartsel in particular have fallen on hard times.  This link takes you to KCNC-TV 4 here in Denver who did the story which aired late last week, please take time to read the article.

Being that several of my 'Skinner Friends & myself attend one or more of the Rondys held near Hartsel, it really "hit home."  To date: 2 outfits are going to lend a helping hand to Hartsel & it's people.  I don't have all the final details just yet but safe to say the local Food Bank will soon be blessed by caring 'Skinners & Rendezvous'ers.  When I find out more "fur-shure" details, I'll post it here.  UPDATE - 2 Feb 09:  A local group representing Buckskinner & Historical Re-Enactors took a substantial donation to Hartsel over the weekend.  Violet Jacobus, who runs the Hartsel Food Bank was in joyous tears as she received the funds.  If you would like to make a monetary donation yourself, please send your donation to: H. O. B. Cafe', Box 47, Hartsel, Colorado  80449.  Please mark the "memo line" of your check, "Food Bank."  In the meanwhile, if y'all happen to in the Hartsel area, stop by and ask how y'all can help.  WAUGH!!!

The following up-date was originally published in the April-June, 2009 (Vol 2 #23) Rocky Mountain Living History Society newsletter.  Many thanks to the RMLHS Board who granted permission for posting on this Web Site.

A Helping Hand

On January 31, 2009, three Board members took a road trip to Hartsel, Colorado to extend a helping hand in the form of money to buy groceries for a Food Bank started in Hartsel by some of the merchants there.
Earlier in the month, there was a story on television (KCNC-TV 4, see above) about the hard times and how people were coming together to help each other.  The story was about Hartsel, Colorado.  You know, that neat little town by where we hold our
Bayou Salado Rendezvous
every year in July!!
Well, RMLHS had a Board meeting and voted to take a check to them to buy food.  The Members that went were: Dave Dukeman, Pam Wilson-
Gebhart & “Hoss” Milligan.  They presented the check to Violet Jacobus of the H.O.B. Café’ & Saloon who, along with Susie Jones, the owner of the South Park Mercantile, started the Food Bank for the residences of Hartsel.  She was so moved to tears and so taken that we folks cared enough to help them.  But really, Hartsel is kind of our second home in July!  What else COULD we do???
     During our
Bayou Salado Rendezvous
in July 2009, we will be taking money and non-perishable food donations at the Registration Tent for the Hartsel Food Bank.  If, until then you would like to send a donation, please send to :

(Web Master's Note:  Latest word I have is that 2 other Rondys: the Ute Trail Rendezvous (late July) & the Como Rendezvous (mid-August) will also be taking money & non-perishable food donations for the Hartsel Food Bank.  WAUGH!!!)
