Several members of our core Team converged “Camp Falcon” on the Fort Carson, Colorado military base on 30 May to set up tipis, a 1-pole and No Powder’s “Taj Majal,” our cook shack, meeting and craft area and information and registration area. We set up and a small contingency that stayed for the week. Rain and wind was the weather for most of the week. We had a Hawk that stayed in a dead tree on a small hill close to camp. He kept track of us. People started showing up Thursday night through Saturday. Some camped and others came in Saturday for both, final set up and Sunday when the kids and families showed up.
Sunday, 7 June, The sun and the kids and families came and they were sure excited to be there. We were able to have tomahawk throw, archery, and native dancers as well as a native flute player, Bear Limvere. Complete with a Hug Lady that would trade a hug for any of the many items on her table. Everything from toys to items made by Buckskinners and Boy Scout Native Dancers were on the table to be traded. The kids always enjoy our Hug Lady! We had tipis open for the families to go into a see what it’s like to live in a lodge. We had a Boy Scout civil war contingent there with camp and a display. They answered questions about everything in their area.
Sunday Lunch was Pot Luck with the ever popular Camp Stew made by No Powder. It was so good it made you want to slap your grandma!! During the lunch, the Monument Valley Can Kicker Band played for the families,Dean "Two Lodges" Sigman (719) 599-5277 or send E-Mail to: sigman5277@msn.com
** = Some additional info about this Event:
Candle Lighters of Southern Colorado are a wonderful group of volunteers from many walks of life. Candlelighters of Sothern Colorado is a volunteer organization of families with Cancer kids and blood disorders. In 1991 a group of buckskinners decided to do a Rondy for the Candlelighter kids and families.
We did some planning and had the local Colorado Springs BSA Native American dance team help as well. We have had groups of people volunteer and now as you see we have expanded it to not only a Rondy but other areas as well.
For more information on Candle Lighters, please visit their Web Site: www.candlelighters.org An open invitation is made to any & all volunteers who wish to help make this Event possible. Volunteers who participate MUST BE IN GOOD HEALTH because of the sensitivity & safety of those kids who are undergoing Chemotherapy.
This year's Event had help from:
The Colorado State Muzzeloaders Association (CSMLA)
The area Boy Scouts
War Eagles Society
Members of Historical Re-Enactors outfits including the Rocky Mountain Living History Society (RMLHS) & several others.
